Mexico is a country located, contrary of what most of the rocking world believes, in North America. It has a vast history, great gastronomy, two oceans (Atlantic and Pacific) and a huge metal scene. Maybe we lack promotion to our local secene, but is big, alive and moving forward. Mexico first participated in Wacken Metal Battle in 2009 with Split Heaven, a band by the way that now has a european record contract with Pure Steel Records. Participating bands so far were:
2009 - Split Heaven: a band from a mexican state called Querétaro (just center of the country)
2010 - Orcus O Dis: a band from borderline city of Ciudad Juárez (just below US)
2011 - Voltax: a band from Mexico City.
The first time international metal bands were brought here they all played (or most of them anyway) on that wrestling arena called Arena López Mateos. Then another promoter surged and after doing some shows in severall theaters (I remember Mercyful Fate, the first times of bands like The Gathering or Tiamat or Nighwish) we established at an old cinema called Circo Volador (Flying Circus). That venue is revered now as the metal cathedral in Mexico City. For the last decade or so, the best metal shows have happened there. Metal Battle happens there as well. it is a very nice place because it is "downhill", so you have a good view everywhere.
As for festivals, there's plenty of them but most of the time with poor quality. Not one really nice Open Air happens in Mexico for instance, there have been some, but tjhey all failed for several reasons.
And best moments, well, at least for me as Metal Battle Mexico promoter, announcing from the stage the first mexican band ever to attend Wacken Open Air, that certainly was an all time high.
