Built by Wacken Open Air

Wacken Metal Battle is the world's biggest international competition created by Wacken Open Air in Germany in 2004. What began as a national band contest in Germany has grown into a global movement connecting metal communities from over 100 countries across six continents. Every year, thousands of bands participate in local qualifiers, national finals, and regional battles for one opportunity — to stand on stage at the legendary Wacken Open Air festival in Germany.

02 — Mission

Built to support the underground scene.

Unlike commercial talent shows focused on mainstream success, Wacken Metal Battle was built to support the underground metal scene. The project exists to discover new talent, strengthen local metal communities, and create international opportunities for emerging bands. It gives artists from countries such as India, Nepal, Lebanon, Iceland, Indonesia, Botswana, South Africa, Chile, Japan, and many more the chance to perform on one of the world's most respected metal festival stages.

03 — How It Works

The road to Wacken.

Each participating country organizes its own official Wacken Metal Battle competition under the global framework of Wacken Open Air. Bands compete through a structured qualification system, beginning with local rounds and national finals. The winning band from each territory earns the right to represent their country at the International Wacken Metal Battle Final held during Wacken Open Air. Every year, only around 30 to 35 international bands are selected to perform at the global final in Wacken. Due to the massive scale of participation worldwide, countries rotate in certain regions to ensure fair international representation and to give emerging metal scenes around the world an opportunity to participate.
